Winterizing your Boat

Its time to winterize the boats.  It seems every year we have a flooded or sunk boat in the marina.

Do you have a winterizing tip?  Post it here.

Do you have a winterizing question?  Post it here.

Re: Winterizing your Boat

I am new to the marina and have a Hunter 240. It has internal water ballast and a swing keel. I am concerned about the possibility of the water freezing. Has anyone had any problem with water ballasted boats over the winter at the Marina?  With Dave advising that the south part of the marina is icing up as well as part of the deep channel, I am wondering if I need to pull out my boat and drain it or perhaps pump out the water. Any help is appreciated.

you do not need to worry about the water ballast.  The salt water out here is not freezing.  What is happening out here is that the salt water becomes so dense that when we get rain water (like the last storm) or fresh river water flowing in it sits on top or flows over the cold dense salty lake water and does not mix with it.  This fresh water on top of the salt water is what freezes then.  It will stay frozen until the wind and waves breaks it up and mixes it with the lake water.  As soon as it mixes with the salt water the ice melts.  Your water ballast should be filled with very salty lake water and should be fine.

Re: Winterizing your Boat

Dave,

Thanks for the reply. I thought that the water usually didn't freeze, but got paranoid when I heard about the ice. Have you ever seen it get cold enough for the lake to actually freeze?

Re: Winterizing your Boat

Back in the mid 80's when the lake was much higher (hense less salty) most of the lake froze solid enough that you could walk on portions.  The marina was frozen solid enough for awhile that you could walk on the ice.  People took chain saws to chop up the ice around their boats.  We only saw that the one year for a short period of time.

During a typical year there are large sections of the lake that will have a one inch thick ice sheet on it.  This was the case out by Antelope Island, our marina and the Deep Channel area until the wind the other day stirred up the lake water and melted the fresh water ice on top.  This morning we have some large sheets of ice in the Deep Channel.  These will be gone by noon.
