Understanding the Wind Forecast Symbols

NOTE:  The forecasted wind strengths, estimated by the harbormaster, are only a guess based on a series of charts and forecasts..  Actual winds can be much stronger or lighter than the forecasted models show. 

The symbols shown here and used by the harbormaster for the purpose of the "Weather Forecast" are based on the Beaufort Scale

Symbol Name Description
Calm Less than 1 mph (<1 knot).  Calm. Smoke rises verticall
Light Air 1 - 3 mph (1 - 2 knots). Wind motion visible in smoke
Light Breeze 4 - 7 mph (3 - 6 knots). Wind felt on exposed skin.  Leaves rustle
  Gentle Breeze 8 - 12 mph (7 - 10 knots).  Leaves and smaller twigs in constant motion.  Flags flying at 45 dregee angle or more
  Moderate Breeze 

13 - 17 mph (11 - 15 knots).  Dust and loose paper raised.  Small branches begin to move.  Flags at rigid 90 degrees.  Depending on wave conditions, Small Craft Advisory MAY be issued 

  Fresh Breeze 

18 - 24 mph (16 - 20 knots). Branches of a moderate size move.  Small trees begin to sway. Small Craft Advisory Issued 

 

  Strong Breeze 

25 - 30 mph (21 - 26 knots)  Large branches in motion.  Whistling heard in overhead wires.  Blowing dust can be seen on the beaches.  Small Craft Advisory Issued

  Hig Wind or Moderate Gale 

31 - 38 mph (27 - 33 knots). Whole trees in motion.  Effort needed to walk against the wind.  Gale Force Warning Issued

 

  Gale, Fresh Gale 

39 - 46 mph(34 - 40 knots)  Some twigs broken from trees.  Cars veer on road.  Progress on foot is seriously impeded.  Gale Force Warning Issued 

  Strong Gale 

47 - 54 mph (41 - 47 knots).  Some branches break off trees, and some small trees blow over.  Gale Force Warning Issued 

  Storm, Whole Gale 

55 - 63 mph (48 - 55 knots).  Trees are broken off or uprooted, saplings bent and deformed. Poorly attached asphalt shingles and shingles in poor condition peel off roofs.  Storm Warning Issued 

  Violent Storm 

64 - 72 mph (56 - 63 knots).  Widespread damage to vegistation.  Many roofing surfaces are damaged; asphalt tiles that have curled up and/or fractured due to age may break away completely.  Storm Warning Issued

 

  Hurricane Force 

73 mph or greater (64 knots or greater).  Very widespread damage to vegitation.  Some windows may break.  Large vehicles may blow over.  Hurricane Force Warning Issued
